Deepak bhai,
The Sony system Jay is using is an average CD player and cassette
player and recorder. It does not have a line out. The only outputs
it has are for the two bookshelf power speakers. As you have
explained, The speaker outputs are low impedence 4-8 ohms. Line
inputs are about 2-5 kilo ohms impedence. Impedance matching and
attenuating the signal for line inputs require all kinds of
circuitary. That is why I didnt suggest using speaker outputs for
getting the signal.
You are right in asking if Jay was able to record anything with that
tape recorder. Lets assume that the tape recorder is ok and can
record low level signals.
My best suggestion is to go th FRY's or any childrens toy store and
get a portable CD player. KIds use it to listen to CD with their
earphones. They cost about $15. The headphone output is a stereo
output and perfect for use as line out. this output can then be
connected to the the line inputs of the tape recorder.
A slightly more complicated method will be to use use the computer to
play the CD and take the line output of the Sound card to the inputs
of the tape recorder.
Jay lives in Dombivali. No Fry's there. I am sure there are some electronics
stores there for him though.
From what I remember from my October visit to Jay, his recording deck is not
a off the shelf commercial deck. It was custom built for him. It is an
amplifier / recorder unit. It is connected to his turn table that plays his
collection of 78 rpm records. He records select songs from his 78 rpm
collections on this deck for his weekly listening sessions. He plays these
cassettes in another boom box for listeners who come for the session.
That is why I suspect that the input for this deck is not even a line in. It
is a input that expects a very low signal that comes from the turn table. If
you connect a high output signal intended to drive external speakers (I
don't believe his external speakers are powered speakers. They are just
standard passive speakers, i.e. the signal that drives them has to pack a
lot of power).

Deepak bhai,
I hope his cd player has a headphone jack. iI not, then the only
decent way would be to use the computer soundcard lineout or headphone
jack . Jay will have to make the connecting cord froma a stereo 1/8
inch plug to whatever his tape recorder requires.
I wish him all the best
PJ
