Finally, a ray of hope for Bollywood’s fading stars

Bharati Dubey | TNN

Mumbai: She was one of the original singing stars of Bollywood. Now,
100-year-old Kalyanibai is possibly the oldest in the fraternity.
Like many fading stars in tinsel town, Kalyanibai doesn’t have the means to
lead a happy life. Yesteryear singer Mubarak Begum’s plight is as moving. She
has a mentally challenged daughter to look after but no income.
Fortunately, voluntary organisation Basera has taken them under its wings.
Basera was set up to provide aid to persons from the industry who due to age,
unemployment or accident, were unable to sustain themselves.
Kalyanibai sang the then popular number, Aahen Naa Bhare Shikwe Na Kiye, from
the film, Zeenat, along with Zohrabai Ambalewali. The actor worked with some of
the top actors in the early 40s and 50s. Some of her famous films are
AchutKanya, Kanyadaan and Ghar Ki Laaj.
Her son-in-law, Saeed Rizvi says, “Her husband left for Pakistan in 1942, she
has been on her own since then, her son Moiuddin works as a spot boy. She needs
the help that is now being provided by the industry.’’ Says actor-director
Dharmesh Tiwari, who runs Basera, “We have taken the responsibility of
providing her with food for a year.’’
She is not the only one. Basera supports about 150 members of the film industry
with food and other aid.
Tiwari has been mobilising donors to help the needy of the film industry.
“Just last month, we took up the responsibility of paying the rent of Mubarak
Begum. We have paid her house rent for one year and will continue to do so till
she needs our help,’’ he added.
Producer Dwarakadeesh, who brings out film and TV serials, will provide
financial assistance to Balaji, a spotboy who is a member of the Film & Allied
Mazdoor Union, who lost both his legs in an accident. The producer will also
sponsor his children’s education. He will also be providing financial help to
dressman Babu Deep Singh, who was paralysed recently .
A lot of actors are now coming forward to help the needy of the film industry.
Actor Dheeraj Kumar has taken up the responsibility to educate 13 children
belonging to the families of cine workers. Actor Smriti Irani is sponsoring the
education of 21 children of the film industry. Adds an insider, “Quite a few
workers are out of jobs. Tiwari and many television actors are coming forward to
help the needy. But it would be nice if bigger names started helping those who
work behind the cameras and receive no benefits in their old age.’’
Tiwari, who started this scheme and has been networking with other associations
involved in helping cine workers, says, “We don’t accept cash, the aid is
always in kind.’’
Cine and Television Artistes’ Association has been providing financial help to
about 30 retired actors and their families.
Tiwari, who also heads this association says, “A fixed amount is sent to the
families on a regular basis. I am hoping to build an old-age home for those
actors and cine workers who don’t have anyone to look after them when they are
past their prime,’’ he adds.

Very true indeed ! In fact I was about to post this info in TOI of
24th on this forum and i saw it put up already.

The last time I witnesed Kalyani was in around 1969/70 or so at
Gowalia Tank at Nana Chowk whe I had personally met Khan Mastana.
After that there was a total vacuum and time passed on.

Now its clear that Kalyani is alive at 100-not out and in a pitiable
condition.Surely, I would like to meet her and if possible talk to her
depending on her present physical/mental status.

What a great pity & dissappointment on the part of Radio Ceylon or
SLBC  right from its inception in 1952/53. Despite having such a huge
library of 78 rpms.. and I told this to Gopal Sharma... that in your
tenure of about 12 years at Radio Ceylon, you have never even once
played any solo of Kalyani even accidently. Finally,  it was Manohar
Mahajan who brought novelty through 'Bhule Bisre' and he played for
once a Kalyani solo.

Can you identify which one ??

Even today, I am ready to wager with anyone ( record collector, I
mean) who can present some 18 songs in solos / duets / chorus
featuring KALYANI.This Kalyani's sister was Hameeda Banu who, some
months ago passed away at Lahore in Pakistan.  I am really fortunate
indeed to have presented her a C-60 cassette containing her very rare
solos and duets through one of my Paki friend. She literally wept on
hearing her young voice. The very first number in the cassette was a
super melody-CHORUS :  Aawo aawo haan.. sung by Hamida Banu / Feroze
Nizami / chorus under Feroze Nizami's baton.

BCSP, in its library;  has a considerable 'colorful input' of Kalyani
for a cassette of 18 songs. The moment I get hold of her address...I
am trying for that

How many songs of Kalyani does Professor's website have?
