Good point, Animesh Sahab! I mourn the demise of even the English
language right here in US. Whenever I see the use of these phrases in
technical and maybe even literary papers/articles in US, I cringe with
extreme discomfort:

1. He looked *out the* window.
2. Take this book *off of* the shelf.
3. Anyone *that* wants to join, let me know.

These are in fact some of the lesser infractions against the language.
Things like "they are the winningest team", "i'll be there
momentarily", and such are the real transgressions. But then, I think
the barometer for verifying the correctness is wrong. American English
and the Queen's English are in fact different dialects, so much so
that they have their own dictionaries, and valid Scrabble words (TWL
vs SOWPODS), so saying one is wrong because its not like the other is
somewhat specious.

This is natural linguistic evolution - happens everywhere. Canadian
French, the various Latin American versions of Spanish, various
versions of Hindi for that matter, etc. have all deviated from their
respective "mother" languages to varying extents. Its not so much a
matter of not knowing what "off" as of subscribing to the American
connotation of it.
