I saw the film recently. In many ways, it was quite disappointing.
But, here, I wanted to talk only about its music. It is rather
surprising that there have been no posts in that respect. {If there
have been, and somehow I missed them, please accept my apologies.}
It is understandable if one compares this film to earlier movies
like "Anarkali" and "Mughal-e-Azam". In the latter case, music
played a large part in making them memorable. Regrettably, I don't
think the same can be said about the present film.
A. R. Rehman has a fine track record. Amongst other honours, he
has won several Filmfare Awards, including this year's. But even
his music doesn't seem to have done much for the movie.
I didn't care much for the "KHwaaja Mere KHwaaja" qawwaali. There
have been better qawwaalis in this particular genre. 'Pia Haji
Ali", for example. Similarly, "Azeem-ush-shaan Shahenshah" is also
not much to enthuse over. Just my opinion.
The only song that I liked is the bhajan "Man mohana". But even
this is rather uneven. The song occurs 'piecemeal' in the film.
Since each such "occurrence" depicts a different atmosphere, hence
the difference in the tune or raag. {That is what I think}.
But the first part is genuinely melodious and quite moving. It
lasts for just about 2' -20".
I would think that a period film like this presents a great oppor-
tunity for any talented Music Director to come up with at least a
decent score, hence my disappointment. Also, my thoughts went to
another comparatively recent period movie --- SRK's "Asoka".
For various reasons, I really liked that film. Visually, it was
brilliant. Performances were above par. The battle scenes were
very well picturised. The climax was utterly believable. And even
the music was quite good, though I am aware that Anu Malik is not
very popular in our forum. I am merely expressing my opinion.
Afzal
I am shocked beyond words that you are comparing Jodha Akbar with
Asoka.
I was also a bit surprised at Afzal Sahib(it if was someone I didnt
know for a long time on RMIM, i wouldnt be) liking Asoka more than
Jodha Akbar(JA).
The movie is way better than Asoka I think. The sets, the background
music and the costumes and also the acting is much better than that in
Asoka. Even Aishwarya seems to do a good job in acting most of the
time in the movie. Beautiful she is anyways... Hrithik was outstanding
and he didnt get to dance much...though he is the best one in the
industry right now. The cinematography and the art direction was
great...
Asoka, in my eyes was pathetic overall.
I think the music of Asoka was terrible. Comparatively JA is
better(though I think ARR is not what he used to be). With Guru and
JA, in my list of current composers he is getting down to the 4th
position! SEL first, second Vishal, third Vishal-Shekhar and 4th ARR.
I am not even considering the authencity of the stories, because I am
sure they are half fiction at the very least in both the movies.
See here:

"The director has admitted that about 70% of the movie is based on his
imagination"
Now, musically my list of songs are:
1. in lamhon ke daaman mein
BEAUTIFULLY sung and picturised. Sonu is sonu. Madhushree I am not a
great fan of, but she is adequate. I think the lyrics are apt for the
situation. This in my opinion is the best song of the movie.
2. kehne ko jashn-e-bahara
Nice singing by Javed. But he sounds too much like Sonu(and UVR, I
have to disagree that he sounds at all like Rafi). It is a beautiful
picturisation, but musically it is average. I like it in the context
of the movie.
3. khwaja mere khwaja
Like everyone else, I like piya haji ali better...
4. man mohana
It is Bela Shende(not Sulakhe). She is a good singer, or I should say
was a good singer. She won the mega-final of SaReGaMaPa(the one in
which male winner was Mohammed Vakil) and at that time she was really
good. She has sung before in Paheli(kangana re kangana re). She is
famous in the marathi music circuit. Her voice isnt as thin as it
sounds in this song, so I will blame ARR for the processing of her
song. It is a nice bhajan, only because you dont get too many
devotional songs in movies these days.
4. Azeem-ush-Shaan(would love it someone cud tell me the meaning of
the mukhada at least, if not the whole song. I need to explain it to
my 5 yr old as he _has_ to know the meaning of each word he sings and
when I told him I dont know what this means, he said 'is it
nonsense?', he thinks his mom knows it all :), I told him I would find
it out for him and it was just that I didnt know that language well
enough).
It is nice song. The picturization is good, but like UVR, when I saw
the movie I was thinking "what is the point of the song and all these
dances, but for the vibrant feeling". It doesnt help or move the
story, it made me want to forward it..but didnt have a choice.
Musically it is just okay.
