Vaani Jayraam too made a similar claim once, in a lecture she delivered
at Anna University, Madras. She claimed that some youngster from
Chengalpattu had written her a letter, stating that her devotional
songs periodically relieved him of migraine. Secondly, she also claimed
that a lady from Trichy (I think) claimed to get relief from cancer
pain upon listening to Vani's voice.

On a realted topic on how music can cure,
here is an excerpt from article on Vijay Kapoor
at Porf. Surjit Sing's web site
http://hindi-films-songs.com/kamalakar/vijay-kapoor.html

"Life has its ups and downs. Some years ago, Vijay Kapoor had a stroke (CVA), lost consciousness and memory. On his familiy's insistence audio tapes of K. L. Saigal and Punkaj Mullik were played round the clock at his bed side. He eventually made a complete recovery, which his physician partly attributed to the healing power of music."

Two items well-known in modern medicine.

The human body is very resilient. Many times, even after long illness, even in supposedly incurable diseases and conditions, the body ultimately wins and the patient is cured. That accounts for many of the 'miracle' cures you hear about with music, ayurved, wholistic junk, homopathy etc. Unfortunately this effect is not reproducible under scientifically controlled conditions, so we do not know how and why it works and cannot use it. It just happens.

The other one is the placebo effect. It is well-known that some patients under some conditions get well even when the real medicine is substituted by candy-pills without the patient or the doctor knowing about it! Seems to work by the power of the mind, whatever that is. This is an active area of modern medical research and may be useful someday in a more systematic way. If and when this works, you will be able to lose weight by power of the mind!

Of course, you will also be able to develop a talent for classical music or even sing like Saigal or Noor Jehan (or Zubaida Khanum, my current favorite after listening to her in Mirza Sahiban, Pakistani).
