No. From absolute technological point of view, it is just a data. And
Mailbox/Email, as we see now, is a highly complexed system as opposed
to USENET. The protocols, the mesh where it operates, the nature of
data, purpose of data, access methods, etc. change accordingly.
Mailserver is a different phenomenon altogether. It is centralised and
meant for specific users. An email sent from one account holder will
not be sent to all email servers existing in the 'internet'. It is
sent to the dedicated addressee. So at any time after delivery the
mail remains only in sender's server and in the recipient's server.
These two sides are highly secured and they are deviod of another
email which is sent by someone to somebody else. In USENET, once the
message is posted, it is public. It is not only stored in my server.
But in all servers which are in NNTP mesh. Anyone can view them; any
valid email address could be registered; any newsreader could read it.

exactly why your sweeping generalisation of the term mailbox in any
regard is refuted. You don't seem to substantiate your views which are
highly outrageous.

What are you talking about? That is "secure mail" that is cached only
on senders and receivers servers. The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
(SMTP) and Post Office Protocol (POP) relays data thru minimum 13
maximum 37 servers (use traceroute to check) and is cached every third
node to boost the speed of transfer. You seem to be very academic
about these things, but have you ever heard of spoofing? That is
nothing but injecting data in the middle of this route by a non-server-
resident SMTP software that simulate through the local ISP server and
feeding with wrong source/header info. If you can tap any of these en
route servers, yo get full access to anything you want. Illegal, but
not impossible. And this is no different from the way the NNTP mesh
gathers and distributes data. The transmission network is all the
same. Here security/privacy is only a question of legality and ethics,
not technology. Sorry to disappoint you therefore..
