That is absolutely stupendous! In my years of sponsoring classical
musicians from India on concert tours of USA, not a single classical
musician (including a few Padmabhushans and a couple of
Padmavibhushans) have been able to sell these many CDs in their USA
tours. Classical music CDs have a very limited "sale potential" even in
India. So if you have been able to sell 6000 CDs by yourself, pat
yourself on your back. But I still think that the number 6000 is an
exaggeration! ............Balwant Dixit

Dear Dr. Dixit

It is not an exaggeration, I assure you. However, they were not CDs,
they were audio cassettes, and it took me 2 1/2 years to sell those.
We had some very good concerts in Indore and Goa. My point was that in
spite of my disorganised efforts. I could sell around 6000 copies only
because of the word of mouth that got around. I believe that Alurkar
and Neelam Audio (Mr. Ranade) sold some of the copies of SHUBHRA KALYA
in US too. And I didn't share the revenue with any label (Sony Music
had offered me 6% royalty for my next album GAGANZHULA.) My problem
was that if I get such a raw deal from music labels, I have to spend
more than 3 years to get my money back.

My little background, I started with a programme called AMRUTACHA
VASA, based on new compositions of classical poetry and we have
presented over 200 programmes of totally original compositions (that
is to say, not old songs by other composers). We have performed all
over Maharashtra and also Indore, Goa, and Bhopal. When SHUBHRA KALYA
was released in DMCC by Manik Verma and Shri Shankar Vaidya, the hall
was so overflowing that the magazine CHITRALEKHA (editor - Dnyanesh
Maharrao) carried an editorial on the crowd that a programme based on
Marathi poetry had generated! We had sold 400 cassettes on the day of
the inauguration. Shantabai Shelke happened to be the President of the
Sahitya Sammellan that year and we could sell a lot of copies at the
venue. The album featured singers like Pt. Satyasheel Deshpande and
Sadhana Sargam, and Ajit Parab and Omkar Dadarkar of the younger
generation. The album got terrific reviews in dailies like Loksatta
and Sakal. If I was a more organised seller, Dr. Dixit, I could have
sold at least 25,000 copies of the album! Let me remind you again that
these were audio cassttes and we had priced them at Rs. 50/- which was
still expensive at that time. (1996).

I would really appreciate it Dr. Dixit, if you could have a look at my
website -

and my blog

I really appreciate your help and I think your advice will definitely
help me. I want to do better at marketing Marathi music as I believe
that Marathi music has to sustain itself economically if it has to
grow. I have made a beginning with the online store that I have on my
website and I hope Marathi music lovers will patronise it.

Thank you and warm regards.

Kaushal S. Inamdar

P.S. CHAPHYACHE SHIMPAN is getting positive reviews here and a lot of
music lovers are appreciating the CD.
