Re: MakeWavs - we convert your recordings to CD

I have a Pioneer CD recorder which allows automatic track creation
every few minutes or can sense the silence between two pieces on a
commercial cassette and insert a new track. You can also manually
advance the track number using remote without interrupting the
recording. It also has "digital" volume adjustment that works both
ways. This is useful for compilations made by mixing different
cassettes, each with their own sound levels. Many recorders claim
volume adjustment feature but they can only attenuate, not amplify. My
Pioneer model works great but is probably obsolete, you may find a
newer models with these features.

As for other edits like noise reduction, I find the Dolby option on my
cassette deck quite adequate. Another solution is to play the cassette
or LP through your amplifier/receiver with all the fancy adjustments
you want so it sounds perfect to you and use the line output from the
receiver to record to CD.

The problem with PC based conversion is that it is dependent far too
much on the quality of the sound card in your PCI slot. Unless you have
invested in a pricey, high end card, the very first step where you
digitise from analog to digital will produce an infidel file. You also
need to play back the tape on a good quality deck with low hiss and
noise, assuming your basic aim is archiving it for posterity rather
than portability.
