I have itchy eyes (see I told you.)

Its just came during the last week. My eyes have got really dry and
crazy itchy. I finally broke down and went to opticians on Thursday
who told me that I had an allergy and wrote me a script for some
drops. (I'd already been using everything in the pharmacy that's over
the counter - from Visine to the strongest non-script stuff, with no
success.)

However because my insurance FUCKING SUCKS I'm not going to pay $212
(yes you read that right) for the drops. I'd rather it just works its
way out of my system naturally.

So I've been continuing with the Visine and friends and also taking
belladonna, apis, and euphrasia - homeopathic remedies on the advice
of my wife's uncle, who's a wiz at all that stuff, but none of it is
really working.

Any suggestions?

Definitely an allergy, and not some kind of infection? Though the
dryness perhaps suggests an allergy, whereas gooey-ness would suggest
an infection.

Why not take a course of antibiotics, to be sure? If it was an
infection, it'd probably clear it up. If it's not, then you've ruled
it out. Ask around and see if any of the fam have a course of unused
antibiotics stashed in the medicine cabinet - making sure that it's a
complete course, and is still in date. This tactic worked for me when
I was utterly convinced I had a kidney infection, yet my doctor
insisted it was just muscular pain in my back (based on no scans, no
urine sample, no nothing...). I feigned a sore throat at another
appointment and was presicribed the antibiotics that cured my
condition. I don't like taking antibiotics as a general rule, but
when it's gotta be done, it's gotta be done.

After all, what's so special about these $200 drops that means they
can't be bought over the counter? My sister has suffered from pretty
severe allergies of various types all her life, but other than certain
creams, has never been prescribed anything that can't be bought OTC.
