I was wondering what formats or bitrates Tauri and Khy were using when

bitrate MP3s or AACs or are you using aiffs or wavs?

Typically 320 mp3s, keeping a fair amount of dynamic range in the
files. So far, it sounds competitive, and some skeptical ears have
been approving, but still, I'm feeling like I need a new round of
comparison tests after some things I've heard listening to some other
DJs on laptops. The main thing keeping me from just going wav so far,
though, is that the convenience of the ID3 tags is hard to give up--
writing all the various metadata (bpm, cue points, waveform overview)
to the song files (instead of just a single library file) makes them
so much more portable between computers, etc. I have a big drive with
all the 44khz/24bit wav files at the ready (I even was doing 88khz for
a while, but decided I can't afford to eat that much memory), but I'm
really hoping for a CD-and-better format to come around that supports
all the metadata these programs generate.

Also, most places I've played, both plug outlets and space are at a
premium, so it's a just a safer bet for me to bring a smaller, bus-
powered drive with the mp3s instead of a bigger mains-powered one with
wavs.

Also Tauri, did you ever buy a dedicated turntable for sampling at
higher quality? I know you were thinking about it.

At the moment, the lab sample station is: Ortofon OM 10-->Technics--
Creek OBH8 phono pre-->Metric Halo Mobile I/0

Bit lesser setup at home with Stanton cart/Denon TT/BBE Pre/Edirol
interface

If you're doubling up a tune, does serato play it twice off the same
file?

Yeah. Or maybe caches it in RAM. Not sure about Serato's specifics
(I'm using Traktor sans turntables myself). Khy, you know?

You can cue using a visual marker, like tape on a record right? Is
that marker allways set to the beginning of the file or can you set it
anywhere like if you wanted to mark the beginning of a break for
instance?

I'd bet you can have several markers per file in Serato.

Peece,
T. Tauri
