Joe, you're gonna enjoy Dime.

I'm sure I will, Walter. And, BTW, that invite for a Sunday 11am walk thru
the Tilden Botanic Garden is more than open to you too. I'd like to see
you.

Now, directing this to rmgd:

I currently have a iMac, and attached to that are 2 hard drives totaling
400 gigs of music CDs and mainly music DVDs, with a couple of regular old
movies. Most of those are saved as a Mac-only Toast Disk Image, but some
CDs are saved as just regular wavs, so anyone should be able to make use
of those.

I'm going to learn from my British friend about setting up a server for
myself, and learn how to access his server, just to make it easy to
exchage software.

Why couldn't rmgd do something like that?

I may not like all the music everyone else here likes, and vice versa, but
it seems like we all have real similar tastes. So why not, for security
reasons, run something like that for the 100 or 1000 rmgd'ers? Surely
lots of rmgd'ers have the hardware to do something like that.

Whatcha think?

As others have pointed out, there are bandwidth issues to consider.
Also, a centralized server becomes a target - it houses the music, and
if any of the stuff being served on it is commercially available it
can now attract the attention of the RIAA.

But more importantly, for stuff that has wide-spread appeal, a single
server is an inefficient model. BitTorrent is a better sharing
method, which is why BitTorrent has become the predominant form of
"trading" today. Torrenting takes advantage of the swarm's overall
bandwidth, and also insures that there's no central repository of
content (if that becomes an issue).
