This week!

"For sky watchers in North America, the watch begins
after nightfall on August 11th and continues until sunrise
on the 12th. Veteran observers suggest the following strategy:
Unfold a blanket on a flat patch of ground. (Note: The middle
of your street is not a good choice.) Lie down and look up.
Perseids can appear in any part of the sky, their tails all pointing
back to the shower's radiant in the constellation Perseus.
Get away from city lights if you can."

Yay! I may head out to the Livermore Wilderness for this one...

I usually go up to Laytonville for this one, but looking at the Moon
last night reminded me of the year I went up when Ol' Luna was shining
brightly. It acts like city lights, sort of. You won't see as many as on
a dark, moonless night, or when it's at her quarter mark or less. Might
still use it as an excuse to get out of town, but the phase of the Moon
will diminish the show this year. It's best after midnight, btw, you
can see 60 or so an hour at its height. Here's a lunar calender for
2009, scroll down to August:

Moonrise, at least here in Ca on the 11th btw, is 10:30 pm.

Thank you, Walter! I think you might see a good show.
No offense, Ray O'Hara.
I'm screwed: showers predicted here. :((((((((((

trust me, it can be very disappointing.
and if you smoke anything you'll go nuts wondering if you actually saw
something.
