Greetings, citizens! TD here to click my Bic and light the flame that
I keep handy for another celebration of Grateful Dead Night here in
the Steel City. This week featured a lot of good music, kind vibes and
a smaller than average crowd. It happens every year in the summer
time, and every year I freak out about it! Summer is a time when
people enjoy being outside rather than being inside in a bar when it's
nice out. I've written about the competition from the good weather,
free concerts, vacations, band tours and college kids going home, not
to mention the recession and it's impact on discretionary spending
affects attendance at Dead Night. This year all those factors and
vectors (don't ask) have coincided and so as a result the crowd was
more intimate. Jen, the ex-Thirsty's manager and upstairs barkeep was
off for the night and the upstairs was closed off -- perhaps just as
well, considering the turnout. There was another late surge of folks
which provided a welcome boost in energy, and enthusiastic newcomers
show up every night thanks to the weekly listing in the City Paper and
and/or word of mouth, so I remain optimistic and choose to have a
positive day! Other than still reeling from my recent unemployment,
life continues to provide challenges and charming moments for my dear
wife Karen and I, so we keep plugging away. Well, enough about me,
let's get on with the music and as always *= played by request.
7/12/90 R.F.K. Stadium, Washington D.C.
Good Times, Feel Like A Stranger, Bertha, Just A Little Light, Cassidy
(it should surprise no-one to know that my degree was in history, so
that I picking this show from 19 years ago on this day may have been
inevitable. Too bad the VFTV filler was only the second set predrums,
but speaking of video, I warm up the DVD player with a "Psychedelic
Party Light Show" I picked up from Netflix. Alas, the monitors on the
bar area weren't connected to the DVD player, a problem since
corrected, so all I had to show video on for the night was the
projection TV in the mid-level performance area and the monitor in the
pool table area. That TV has it's own issue with satellite input in
color but the auxillary DVD input displays in black and white! We
can't figure out why, any suggestions? The DVD was a series of fractal
zooms, kinda hypnotic on the big screen but the b&w TV downstairs was
monochromaticly weird - meanwhile, a Harry Potter movie plays in the
bar where "muggles" has a more entertaining meaning)
Garcia, Grisman & Kahn 1995 studio release
Blue Yodel #9 (Jerry's last studio session, released on a Jimmie
Rogers tribute album and later by Grisman)
6/9/76 Boston Music Hall, Boston MA
Saint Stephen > Eyes Of The World > Let It Grow, Brown Eyed Women
(great jamming, these guys had so much energy coming back from their
hiatus. The Eyes is especially sweet)
5/7/77 Boston Garden, Boston MA
Tennessee Jed, The Music Never Stopped, * Terrapin Station, Estimated
Prophet (interesting early versions for those last two tunes. The
music is right on, upbeat and accessible as folks mosey on in, order
from a wide range of beers and check out the new menu. There's new
management in the kitchen as chef Matt has professional experience
and has markedly upgraded the quality of the food)
10/9/84 Centrum, Worcester MA
Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower > Jack Straw (this
completely shreds, particularly the out of control Straw surprisingly
coming out of Franklin's. At this point, the fractal flames filling
every frame has zoomed it's last and so let's go to the video,
literally)
7/24/87 Oakland Stadium, Oakland CA (video)
Dear Mr. Fantasy > I Need A Miracle > Bertha > Sugar Magnolia (this
vid circulated well before the VFTV was released, good stuff but it
would have been cooler to also get the third sets with Dylan)
9/24/88 Madison Square Garden, New York NY
West L.A. Fadeaway, Little Red Rooster (both songs feature the only
appearance of ex-Rolling Stone Mick Taylor with the GD for this
rainforest benefit show. I played this because he was supposed to play
a free show here in the area tonight, but he ended up cancelling "due
to being in a hospital in London" according to what folks who went
were told -- hope he's okay. Oh well, you heard him here at Dead
Night!)
7/4/86 Rich Stadium, Orchard Park NY (video)
Cold Rain And Snow > Fire On The Mountain > Samson And Delilah, The
Wheel > I Need A Miracle > Uncle John's Band > drumspace > Gimme Some
Lovin' (great proshot in daylight as the GD opened for Dylan, so no
lighting effects, just the band. The Wheel > Miracle > UJB were
simulcast to Willie Nelson's farm in Texas for one of the first Farm
Aid broadcasts. During the drums, I lowered the video audio and
substituted something completely different)
David Murray Octer 3/6/97 Fillmore, San Francisco CA
* Shakedown Street (this brassy, upbeat instrumental arrangement of
this ubiquitous request spun a few heads around. I also really like
the China Doll and, believe it or not, the One More Saturday Night
from this performance)
2/4/70 Family Dog, San Francisco CA (video)
Hard To Handle, China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider (this PBS
broadcast was also eventually released but my tape derived from a TV
broadcast. Finally got some Pigpen in the mix)
Jerry Garcia Band 12/4/77 Rutgers U., New Brunswick NJ
Simple Twist Of Fate (Jerry interpreted Dylan beautifully, arguably
never better than this tune)
12/17/87 Warfield Theater, San Francisco CA (video)
When I Paint My Masterpiece, Deep Elem Blues, Victim Or The Crime,
Bird Song, Dark Hollow, Turtle Dove, Knockin' On Heaven's Door (this
is Jerry and Bob on acoustic guitars, John Kahn on standup bass and
Joan Baez for the last three tunes. Not bad, also taped from the
telly)
The Dead 8/18/04 Charlotte NC
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (cool cover tune. While this and the next
few sets play, I play a Mystery Science Theater DVD, "the Mole Men"
scary stuff, eh keeeeds?)
9/5/82 US Festival, Devore CA
Playing In The Band > Shakedown Street > New Minglewood Blues (the
band hit the stage in the early morning with this wake-up call from
Phil: "So, this is the *US* Festival, eh? So, how are *we* feeling??
[crowd cheers] Well, settle down and spread 'cuz it's time for
breakfast in bed with the Grateful Dead!" Priceless, and yes finally a
GD version of Shakedown)
3/30/90 Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale NY
Standing On The Moon > Not Fade Away, Attics Of My Life (a nice end to
another in a weekly series of keeping the flame. Thanks for being with
us, and it's always a pleasure)
And that's the way it is, Wednesday July 29th. @ 4:45 EDST. Please
love, or at least respect, one another and have an inevitably positive
day! Peace,
TD
