When Tower went out of business, I was going to the liquidation once or
twice a week, since they had two locations relatively close to my place,
plus Xmas was coming up, and I ended up getting quite a chunk of CD/DVD
(and even a cassette or two) while it lasted, including some Criterion
Collection movies and RVG Blue Note re-issues.
Maybe because Circuit City has only one location not quite as near my
house, I usually only visit their 5-dollar bin anyway, and I don't have a
list to fulfill, but I hadn't been to their liquidation (four days left!)
until today, and only because I was already in the neighborhood doing
other things.
Down to the nitty gritty alright. Half the store taped off and filled
with surplus display racks. No computer mics to be found. Oh well. CDs?
Haven't really bought any since Tower went down. What's on the DVD racks?
Well, if you're looking for literally dozens of copies of "I Am Legend" or
"Han***," this could be the best four days of your life here in the NW.
I scoped out "Used Cars," which is not only worth paying $2.80 for but
also co-stars the guy who wrote the lyrics for "Victim Or The Crime."
(IIRC, he plays the guy with a ghastly fear of the color red). Check.
"The English Patient" -- not exactly something I was looking for, but it
won Best Picture, Ralph Fiennes knows WTF he's doing up there, the R
rating is due in part to "Sexuality," and it was eight bucks for two
discs. Check.
Scoping the remains -- didn't take too long. More copies of "I Am Legend"
and "Han***" left behind among the iPod cases, USB cords and camcorder
batteries. Oh, and a small pile of other DVDs in some random corner --
one of which included "I'm Not There," which is among the movies I'd buy
rather than rent even though I haven't seen it -- if the price is right.
I looked around. No one had just set this stuff down. I looked at the
price. Not even nine bucks after discount. Check!
Circuit City -- bankrupt.
Three good movies (five discs) for less than twenty bucks - priceless.
I bought 250 CDs during The Great Tower Liquidation. Average cost
around $5.50. There are still ~25 that I've yet to open.
I went to the local Circuit City last weekend once their CD prices
reached 50% off. Unfortunately this store was already boarded shut.
Oh well... I got enough CDs that I'll never listen to again.
