Dead Night 12/14/08 Thunderbird Cafe playlist & commentary

Holiday greetings to all Dear Readers! TD somewhat belatedly checking
in to relay this week's Dead Night update. All the seasonal activities
and running around took a certain priority but we're getting back on
track again. Let's see, what was happening a mere two weeks ago? Those
that were there may not remember and those who weren't there may not
care, so why am I doing this again? Oh yeah, it's that "keeper of the
flame" deadication that channels the spirit and propels the
invocation. I just re-read the previous sentence and it sounds like a
description of a seance or something you'd encounter in vespers but it
seems accurate enough in this context, so carry on! The congregation,
oops I mean, bar-goers, ebbed and flowed throughout the evening, still
celebrating the come from behind Steeler victory over the Ravens
("nevermore", or at least until the playoffs). I got some more
interesting requests and folks were enjoying themselves and the
season. Karen, my sweetie of a wife, was alas absent, basically just
not feeling up to par enough to accompany me. I appreciate her being
with me, and at the Cafe it's helpful as she chats with our regulars
and the newbies to see where they're coming from while I'm busy
running the sound and video. Jen, the upstairs barkeep was also not
present, she had let us know that she wouldn't be able to make the
last few weeks of the year due to family obligations, so the upstairs
bar was closed off and dark. The scene is set, let's join the
gathering and as usual * played by request.

9/29/89 Shoreline, Mountain View CA
Good Times, Feel Like A Stranger > Franklin's Tower, Wang Dang Doodle
(a good way to kick off the music - speaking of kickoff, the Sunday
Night football game rules the bar-area TVs until 11:00 or thereabouts.
I counter-program with a DVD of cartoons, all with a Christmas theme,
including Rudolph and a Tom & Jerry tearjerker)

12/31/90 Oakland CA
Bird Song, Promised Land (features Branford, he was the best fit of
all the guest sax players in my opinion. David Murray was too squonky
and Clarence Clemmons seemed too "bar-band" sounding)

10/17/83 Lake Placid, NY
* Sugaree (first request, and have I got a wowser for you!)

7/2/88 Oxford Plains ME
Playing In The Band > Uncle John's Band > * Terrapin Station > jam (I
must dmit to a certain favoritism for the Playing > UJB combo, and
this one is right up there. Phil was dropping some phat bass bombs and
then they go into Terrapin, requested by Karenina in abstentia)

9/4/91 Richfield Coliseum, Richfield OH
China Doll > * The Wheel (I was all ready to let the Wheel roll into
Throwing Stones [the second Wheel > TS request in as many weeks] but I
noticed that the guy making the request was departing so I bagged the
TS in favor of the next request, ya gotta be quick on your feet for
this "instant-gratification" subset of requestors)

JGB 11/26/83 Binghamton NY
* Run For The Roses (not one of my fondest tunes from the JGB
repetoire, and other tidbits from this show beckoned but the steady
[and welcome] stream of requests dictated otherwise)

Phil & friends 10/1/00 Burlington VT
jam > * Saint Stephen > jam > Cumberland Blues (what, no GD versions
of St. S. on hand? Phil to the rescue! Nice jamming and a bonus of the
Cumberland to keep matters upbeat. Win-win situation)

9/19/90 Madison Sq. Garden NY NY
* Let It Grow > Jam, * Jack Straw, Bertha (from the newly-wed green-
eyed elf and her mellow fellow husband, a request by the most loyal of
regulars. As Playing had been played earlier, I bagged it and started
with the LIG, then let it rip into a sweet pre-drums jam. This has
recently been released as a Road Trips from the GD and is well worthy
of acquisition. By now, the football game and post-game highlights and
news were over. )

7/9/95 Soldier Field, Chicago IL (video)
* Shakedown Street, Samson And Delilah, So Many Roads, Samba In The
Rain, Corinna > drums (since Jen and the person who, a few months ago,
had been offended by the airing of this Last GD Show was not in
tonight, I decided to go ahead and play it and yes, there were folks
dancing in fron of the big screen to Shakedown, yay!)

9/26/90 studio rehearsal, San Francisco CA
Terrapin/Playing morphage (just on a kick while the drums were
playing, I tossed this in as a flashback which I got through Mr. Gans
as part of his KPFA marathon a few years ago, please feel free to
support public radio!!)

5/31/92 Silver Bowl, Las Vegas NV (video)
mini-space > Attics Of My Life > Spoonful > The Other One > Morning
Dew, Baba O'Reilly > Tomorrow Never Knows (the post drums of a video I
played a few weeks ago, really nice audience shot on a tripod with an
excellent audience audio feed, good close ups and Steve Miller sitting
in for the whole megilla. I caught the '95 run here and really had
fun)

4/17/72 Tivoli, Copenhagen Denmark (video)
Chinatown Shuffle, It Hurts Me Too (finally got the requisite dose of
Pigpen together, I must have chosen the older, flawed version of this
because there were freeze-ups, but it played Pig's tunes fine. I let
the video run and switched to audio for the last set of the night)

Garcia & Grisman 12/91 Warfield, San Francisco CA
God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman, Ripple (one of the very rare seasonal
tunes ever played - Run Run Rudolph sung by Pigpen is the only other
one I can think of - quite the appropriate selection for this time of
year. Folks are wandering out into the blustery chill and on their way
home, time to pack up the portable milieu and do the same. Thank you
all for coming to this evening's festivities - is it Festivus for the
rest of us? - and hope to see you again soon)

Alrighty then, let's get this show on the road. Best wishes for a
meaningful holiday season and high hopes for a happy and healthy New
Year! Love and peace, TD

I think a pillow should be the peace symbol, not the dove.
The pillow has more feathers than the dove, and it doesn't
have a beak to peck you with. --Jack Handey
