Re: What was that about clinging to guns?

I find it ridiculous that the
govt. can't set up a computerized database at least as good as the
one the credit card industry manages to use many millions of times a
day.

Well, sure, the implementation is flawed (the Virginia Tech guy being
a case in point). But that doesn't change the fact that a mandatory
waiting period is a decent idea in order to do a *proper* background
check.

Can you break that down for me? If the implementation *wasn't* flawed then
what would be the point of a waiting period? If all the relevant
information is in the database then what "proper" check is left to do?

Picture yourself using your credit card and the store telling you that the
purchase has been approved but they're going to wait a couple of weeks
before letting you have the TV so they can do a "proper" check to make sure
you're who you say you are and Visa *really* will loan you the money to make
the purchase. Or imagine getting pulled over for a traffic violation and
the cop telling you your license comes back clean and you have no warrants
but they're going to hold you for a couple of weeks to do a "proper" check
to make sure they didn't miss anything. Would that change your views about
the "fact" that a proper check on someone's criminal history should take a
few weeks?

This waiting period thing strikes me as one of those feel-good laws we know
probably doesn't really work but we do it anyway because we figure we need
to do *something* even if it's ineffective. If the federal govt. is going
to spend money I'd prefer to see something actually accomplished, and
tightening up the background check so felons and people found by a court to
be dangerously unstable are in the database makes more sense than a waiting
period during which time nothing useful happens.
