Purchased fine seats several weeks ago for a small theater on the upper west side, near Lincoln Center, for Little Feat. A few days ago, they announced that the Steve Kimock/Billy Goodman duo would open. Sweet! Havn't seen Kimmy in a bit, great addition!
After dining at a Italian joint nearby that would have been just as comfy in the heart of south Florida's Century Village, we mosied on over the what was actually a non-denominational church that's used for entertainment too. Very nice, small intimate venue and walked in with Kimock/Goodman playing. Goodman stands wearing 1 of 2 Martin Dreadnaughts (1 open tuned, 1 regular) while Steve's playing 1 of several electrics.
The sound is brilliant due to the church's open chamber allowing all of Kimock's fabulous subtleties to shine through. He is on and enjoying himself through a blend of blues, country & rock tunes. A fantastic Me & My Uncle and Jorma's classic Good Shepeord, highlights for sure. Goodman's voice resonates beautifully in this environement and the great acoustic sound should have triggered a full band warning. Billy's sound varies from strong acoustic/folk style to Jorma's bluesy tones (he studied and played many a time at Fur Peace). We really enjoyed this duo and they clearly enjoyed playing together and the environment. They have another show planned at Mexicali Blues in NJ, I recommend catching them, great evening of music.
They finish their set and we break for the beer line and restroom line, both significant. Little Feat take the stage and within seconds of their 1st notes, it's evident that a 7 piece band resonates differently in a church than an acoustic setup. Muffled, poor mix, keyboards & congas completely unheard many times (which was just as well since the conga player looked like he was stoned out of his mind and barely touching the skins). The sound simply sucked especially since the last time we caught Feat was at BB King's which has very nice warm acoustics. The bass and drums were bouncing all over the joint and it was initially hard to get into it.
Or course, these are some fine musicians. In short order I was able to get past the sound and into the tunes and jams. The setlist was superb, a great assortment of teases (i.e. Shakedown), covers & classic Feat. The Dixie Chicken was intertwined effectively with a drum solo, a rockin' Tennessee Jed and finishes with last few verses of a rollicking Chicken (w/Kimock taking brilliant lead). By that time, we were all on our feet as Feat took over and the sound quality (which still sucked) took 2nd stage. The only other annoyance was the yuppie dressed droll troll guy next to me who either couldn't stop farting or hasn't washed his ass in 5 years. By the time Let It Roll played the encore, the audience was fired up and evening came to an end. Highlights, The Weight, Get Up Stand Up (Marley), Honest Man & Fatman of course. Great setlist, difficult venue for a full band (advance team should have thought about the fact that there was no heavy curtains or carpet to absorb some sound), nice evening overall. The Kimock/Goodman duo was worth the price of admission alone. Goodman is a talented, fun entertainer with good stories (including a drunk Pigpen tale). The Feat still have it but it didn't shine through easily due to sound issues and what appeared to be an uninterested soundboard/soundman placed next to the stage rather than in the seats setback.
