Bill Polian , 64, has the final say in all Colts personnel matters as
well as a strong partnership with Dungy; he won't sign a player the
coach doesn't like. Belichick makes the final call on Pats player
acquisitions, but in drafting and free agency he entrusts the table-
setting to Pioli, 42. Polian builds almost exclusively through the
draft, putting together an impeccable record in 10 seasons with Indy:
19 of 22 starters came to the team in the draft or as rookie free
agents. New England drafted 15 of its 22 starters but has relied on
free agency and trades much more than Indy.

There is no doubt that Bellichick trusts Pioli's decisions and
personnel assessments, and I have no idea how often he has overruled
Pioli, though I know it has happened.
It's Bellichick's call, the buck stops with him.
in the article you quoted).
What's not clear to me is what happens if Pioli and Belichick disagree
- King writes that Belichick trusts the table-setting to Pioli for the
draft and free agency. I tend to doubt that Belichick can spend a lot
(if any) time evaluating college players during the season given how
much time he spends on developing his game plans. Based on that, I
don't know how much of a position he's in to overrule Pioli unless
Pioli makes an obvious bad choice (and I don't think Pioli does that).
I don't doubt that Belichick is heavily involved in personnel
decisions, I would be shocked if he isn't involved directly in
interviewing potential free agents. I just question whether he's the
de facto lead on draft decisions.
