cesspool on the lake for awhile with my wife-to-be before we
got married, 828 Aldine just blocks from Wrigley. And get this,
my wife wants to retire there !! I am not kidding. She loves
the music scene, the shopping scene, the restaurants etc. etc.
I'm quite fond of some of the restaurants myself but there's
no way I'll ever live in Chicago again. I'm satisfied with the
occasional visit for a concert and some fine dining. Where in
the hell do you fly fish in Chicago and what would I do with my
hunting dog ?
I dunno Ken......Champaign or Chicago? Chicago wins.
If I thought that were true I'd still be living in Chicago.
Chambana is no great shakes but it's a lot better than living
in the city. When I do want to go to the city there's two
trains each way every day. I'm plenty close enough to Chicago
right where I am.
Fly fish? Plenty of water in the area....lakes, ponds.....the Root and
Milwaukee rivers in WI for the fall runs, the Kankakee, DuPage and Fox
rivers (tremendous smallmouth fishing!) in the Chicagoland area...then
there's the southwest WI streams....
Your dog? Get rid of it. I dont think its fair to keep a dog cooped up
in the city.
That's a pretty big "area" you're talking about and that
awful drive in and out of the city would pretty much negate
any of the soul-enriching benefits of a fishing trip. And
get rid of the dog ?!!? Are you nuts ? That's not gonna
happen.
I'm pushing for Winona, Minnesota. It's a college town on
my beloved Mississippi within a stone's throw of the southwest
Wisconsin streams and the southeast Minnesota streams and it's
as close to the Twin Cities as we are in Chambana to Chicago.
Winona is far enough north to have consistent snows, we're lucky
to have one winter in three with enough snow to XC ski a few days,
and it's on the Amtrak line so old retired folks don't have to
drive to the Twin Cities or Chicago. All that and pheasant in the
fields and ducks on the flyway, hell I'm ready to move *now* ! ;-)
