Greetings, thrill-seekers! Yeppers, it's yer ol' pal TD here to spread
the good word about the latest happenings at Dead Night! This weekly
convocation of veteran heads and dewy-eyed newcomers started out
slowly but folks boogied in and eventually the joint was rockin'. I
had anticipated more seeing doctrinaire wage-slaves who normally can't
make it due to their early Monday morning rise and shine but they were
on holiday, it seems. Hobby the barkeep got the the sound system back
in order after weekend bands hadn't restored the mixboard to the way
they found it. I am sorry to report that next Sunday 6/1 will be
Hobby's last night at the T-bird as he is moving to Nashville to
further his musical career - good luck and Godspeed old bean! Karen
and I were taking it easy as well, having partied out the previous
evening for yours truly's birthday celebration. Tonight, it's off to a
friend's house for the traditional Memorial Day cook out and barbeque
- mmmm, ribs! - and thence to the TV to root our glorious Penguins on
in the Stanley Cup, hopefully we will prevail.
In the meantime, take a gander at the lineup of fabulous tunes that
highlighted the night and as usual, * = played by request.
3/2/87 Kaiser, Oakland CA
Jack Straw, China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider > Man Smart, Woman
Smarter, * Ship Of Fools (the first tune kinda got swallowed up by the
missing sound from the back room but afterwards, full steam ahead! I
love the "extra" drum kicks at the beginning of China Cat, and the
request was actually played towards the end of the evening, if
anyone's keeping score)
Mickey Hart and Bembe Orisha, no date or venue
Iko-Iko (this is his take on the Mardi Gras standard, it was just
okay. While the first few sets are playing, I tossed a great movie
that has far out visuals in for serious eye candy, "Across The
Universe", which I highly recommend. I might have rethought some of
the tunes I played at the beginning because there was some duplication
with the Ratdog video but no worries mon, there wasn't a whole lot of
audience overlap to notice)
9/5/82 "Us Festival", Devore CA
Playing In The Band > Shakedown Street, New Minglewood Blues (at the
beginning of this show - 9:30 am! - Phil makes this little intro: "So,
this is the Us Festival? How are WE feeling?? Well, settle down and
spread, cause it's time for breakfast in bed with the Grateful Dead!"
I should have faded down the Minglewood - not much of a segue and I
forgot that it was also in the Ratdog video)
6/26/88 Civic Arena, Pittsburgh PA
* Touch Of Grey, * Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hey Jude coda (a few folks from
Slippery Rock in town to catch the lights of the big city, I was at
this show and was duly impressed by soundman Healy using a joystick to
chase the sound, especially space, around the arena with those big
speakers mounted in the back matching the stage array presence)
5/25/77 The Mosque, Richmond VA
The Other One > Wharf Rat > The Other One > The Wheel (31 years ago
today, meaty jams and interesting segues. I never did get to play any
of the 5/26/73 Kezar show I brought for additional this-day-in-history
material, guess it'll keep until next year. At this point, Across the
Universe has ended so I play a few old Betty Boop cartoons until the
main video is ready to roll)
Ratdog 3/4/07 Palace, Greensburg PA (video)
jam > casey Jones > New Minglewood Blues > Queen Jane Approximately >
Loser, Take Me To The River, Lucky Enough > New Speedway Boogie >
Weather Report Suite: Prelude > Part I > Part II Let It Grow (this is
a great video, shot from the front row of the balcony, a single camera
but lots of panning and zooming, synched with soundboard audio. I was
at this show with Karen, and it is outstanding, thanks Eric!)
7/13/85 Ventura CA
* One More Saturday Night (quick request)
Ratdog 3/4/07 video (continued)
jam > Me And My Uncle, Desolation Row (both acoustic), Silvio >
Tequila > Silvio > Tequila > Silvio, Weat LA Fadeaway, Iko-Iko >
drums / "stuff" > Sugaree > China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider,
Samson And Delilah (the acoustic jam leading up to Uncle is
unbelievably beautiful. Did you know that Me & My Uncle is the song
that the Dead performed most often in their 30 year career? It's true,
as is the fact that Desolation Row is the Dead-performed song that has
the largest number of words in it. There were a few folks at the cafe
who were at this local show, this brought back some pleasant memories.
Come back, Bobby!)
9/22/91 Boston Garden, Boston MA
* Brown-Eyed Women (time to fill a few more requests as Last Call is
heard. A very enthusiastic newcomer, when asked for a song to play,
responded by quickly reeling off a half dozen suggestions. Alrighty,
then!)
Jerry Garcia Band - "Shining Star" release
* When The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game, * Struggling Man (lame
cover art but great live cuts. Got a couple of more Betty Boop
cartoons on the big screen, the animation style of the 1930s is so
different than today. Sorry, I didn't get any Pigpen played, nor did I
get to Garcia & Grisman "So What" in honor of Miles Davis' birthday.
Come on down to the TD-bird next week and we'll have a swell time.
Hope all is well with you and yours, so until then, have a positive
day. I love y'all! TD
from ROLLING STONE 08/23/69:
"My way is music. Music is me being me and trying to get higher.
I've been into music so long that I'm dripping with it; it's all I
ever expect to do. I can't do anything else. Music is a yoga,
something you really do when you're doing it. Thinking about what it
means comes after the fact and isn't very interesting. Truth is
something you stumble into when you think you're going someplace else,
like those moments when your playing and the whole room becomes one
being -- precious moments, man. But you can't look for them, and they
can't be repeated. Being alive means to continue to change, never to
be where I was before. Music is the timeless experience of constant
change."
