There are a couple of things that I would ask you to consider.
First is that you made up your mind about riding, but you seem to be
inexperienced. You ask for advice here about some pretty basic stuff, and
that is okay. But it tells me that you are indeed a novice. Have you ever
driven a motorcycle at speed on the freeway or road? Have you considered
that if you ride a bike long enough, eventually you are going to have to lay
it down at speed.
Leathers and a helmet are one thing. But neither of them protect you from
blunt trauma, or a broken neck or back, or brain injury cause from
concussive effects.
I have known many people who rode. One of them hit a deer going 60 miles an
hour on a mountain road. He was wearing helmet and leathers, and he spent
months being rehabilitated back from idiocy due to brain injury, and has an
ankle that is basically fused when it was broken when he landed on it. A
woman I know had to lay her Harley down in town, and relatively low speed,
but the skid took her into the curb where her foot got caught between the
foot rest and the curb and amputated all of her toes on one foot. I could
go on and on with another half dozen stories.
You might not be afraid of dying, but you ought to consider what it might be
like to live badly crippled.

A lot of people has some good advice here on the newsgroup.
My opinion, I would say forget about it.
I had one, use to ride.
Sure it is fun and all and the feeling of the open road. But then I
realized that there are to many idiots on the road.
I have had two people hit me in the rear sitting at lights and in
bumper 2 bumper traffic.
People who drive on the road just don't care about motorcycles. They
just don't!

This is kinda true, sorry to say.
Listen to me Iron, Snorkey, or Rami
I have know you for a few years and are one of the few that I have met
on this newsgroup.
You have a wicked talent.
One that most people would dream to have 1/2 that.
Don't loose it.
think about it. The talent could be lost. Something you haved worked
so hard for all those years would be lost FOREVER in an instant. It
will, could happen. If my hands were my prize possesion I would not
risk it by riding a motorcycle.
It is very tough to play your guitar with your mouth.
I guess it could be done (Jimi Hendrix)?
I kinda like you & know you, so I would advise against it.
Ever since cell phones came into existance I gave up riding
To many idiots on the road!!!
No matter how fast you are going, somebody behind you want's to go
faster then you.
Hell' I am afarid to drive on the road in a car in this tri-state
area.
Plus if you get stuck on a motorcycle it is quite a BITCH.
You better have a good friend with a pick-up truck available when
ever.
Your hands and fingers are your livelyhood, don't risk it!!!
It is just not worth the risk!
Think about NEVER playing the guitar again!
Or even typing a keyboard.
You might not be afraid of dying, but you ought to consider what it might be like
to live badly crippled.
Just some friendly booie advice.
booie.........
