Any bikers on RMGD?

Hey now, my freaky darlings.

No, I don't mean cyclists. I mean bikers, as in motorcycle riders.

I am considering buying my first motorcycle, and would appreciate
any tips or information you could provide. I have been doing some
research on the subject, and have pretty much decided that my first
bike will probably be a standard (aka "naked" or "street") or a
touring bike, rather than a cruiser or a sport bike.

I am on a limited budget ($1000 - $1500), so a Harley-Davidson
is pretty much out of the picture...besides which, I would prefer a
quieter motorcycle. The whole "thunderous exhaust" thing doesn't
appeal to me in the slightest. I have been looking mainly at Honda
and Yamaha bikes, mostly from the early- to mid-1980s, of which
there are several listed on Craigslist for Western Massachusetts.

Any riders out there who could steer me in a helpful direction?
