I am thinking of just using an external hard-drive to store shows and
skip the burning to CD. I may store some shns on CD but aside from
that, it is incredibly convenient to have a shows' list on a GUI and
click on any one I want for music in my house. Do many of you here
just store shows on the computer hard drive and play them through your
sound system?
Yes. It's all digital now man. Haven't burned a CD in over a year.
Burn them to DVD to archive though, or another hard drive at least,
Losing music is a bummer.

I use Mediamonkey for random music, just create a playlist and it
randomizes nicely. Best mediaplayer out there IMO.

Too bad I have 300 shows in SHN on CD archive, but slowly moving their
way to the hard drive.

Any recommendations for a reasonably priced (would $100 be
reasonable?) and reliable 320 - 500G backup hard drive?

I've been using Seagate's FreeAgent external (USB 2) drives for a couple
years now with no problems. They range in size from 120Gb to 750Gb.

They don't require any external power (it gets its juice from the USB
connections) come with pre-installed backup software that you can install,
but I just delete the directory its in and start using the drive right
away. There's no formatting or anything else needed--just plug it in and
go. They're rugged and will slip into a shirt pocket as well.

The only downside is that they require 2 USB ports, but if you're just
using them for storage, there's no reason you can't simply unplug them and
put them on a shelf when you're not using them.

The Seagate drives are much quieter than Western Digital drives.
