Disabled girl's parents defend growth-stunting treatment
NEW YORK (CNN) -- It's been a year since the parents of a severely
disabled child made public their decision to submit their daughter to
a hysterectomy, breast surgery and drugs to keep the girl forever
small. Today, the couple tell CNN, they believe they made the right
decision -- one that could have a profound impact on the care of
disabled children worldwide.
This is a tough one. I think if I was going to have a child (well, not
me but my S.O.) and pre-delivery tests showed that the child would be
born severely disabled, as in the cited example, I would personally
want to abort the pregnancy (yes, kill the child, for those of you who
will insist on that terminology). A terribly selfish decision perhaps,
but that's how I feel.
Maybe so ... but then calling a fetus a child is a classic case of
conceptual confusion.
R.
That is really true, Richard, and, you have an understanding that
gives me a wonderful feeling of hope that
men and women can actually understand one another.
Rob, it is not less difficult to choose an abortion. Abortion is NOT
bad. I really know, and if it is an easy
decision that reflects on a percentage, I would imagine small, of
women who choose to have abortions.\
Mary, I did not use the term "easy", in fact I avoided that, and said
"less hard". Abortion should never be an easy choice, it's the lesser
of two evils. I used "bad" in the sense that no one ever says "woo
hoo, I'm having an abortion", i.e., it is a bad "color" that no one
thinks is pretty, and I then went on to say that it is sometimes the
correct choice. A bad thing being the correct choice - no wonder it's
a very hard decision to make.
I really feel from reading this that the parents were wacked out
I think that's what the author intended - for the readers to think the
parents are whacked. And everyone who uses the terms "mutilate" and
"sterilize" in this thread also want to influence their readers.
Everyone does it, including me.
, and
this is a rare and ultra-bizarre case.
You got that right, so lets not treat this case as if it were a normal
child.
But abortion is really something you don't quite get, and I love you
to bits
Love ya too, Mary, but please don't judge that I don't "get it" from
this one thread/exchange. My sister had an abortion as a 16-yr old,
and I know it was the right choice for her, but it affected her
deeply. When my wife was preggers, they detected the possilbilty of a
genetic anomaly (mosiac indications of Turner Syndrome) and informed
us, probably because they had to, that we could terminate the
pregnancy. We wanted the kid, so that suggestion was met with an
instant "hell no", and our daughter has matured to age 4 absolutely
perfectly. I'm certainly pro-choice and, how should I put it, not
anti-abortion (pro-abortion sounds creepy, but some pro-choicers
respect the choice of the individual but believe the choice should
never be abortion), and I think I understand all the issues associated
with both sides of the abortion debate, so I think I do "get it".
