I gave you a recommendation and I certainly understood that you weren't
wanting to pay much over $500. I think Klaus's bookshelf speakers will
give you more bass response than the towers you're looking at,
particularly when you factor in the fact that you're only going to drive
them with 60 watts.

Part of the issue is that I don't have shelves or tables where I want
to put the speakers, I'd rather have floor standing units if I can
find ones that I like.

But the part of my OP that I think I should concentrate on now is the
receiver. Yes, it's only 60 watts, and it is going on 20 years old.
It has periodic quirks that some very talented repairmen were unable
to fix (because they could not reproduce the problem in the shop).

So I think I really need to consider getting a new amp/preamp at this
point. Unfortunately, I know even less about receivers than/amps than
speakers. I'd sort of rather just have one unit rather than a free
standing amp and preamp, but I'm even there, I'm not sure.

Peace,
Neil X.

Hi Neil,

Looks like we wrote our messages at the same time. So, you're already
thinking about a new amp, preamp/amp, or receiver? Are you able to
use your old Carver as the preamp/tuner, and hook in a new power amp.

I am thinking about doing that. The occasional glitches with the
Carver seem to go away if I unplug it for 5 minutes and replug (the
whole unit is microprocessor driven, it's a bit more prone to
electrically insane behavior than it should be--doing things like
outputting both the cable box and the CD player to the speakers
simultaneously, or dropping one channel entirely. But it is a rare
phenomenon, so I could do something like buy a power amp and keep
using the Carver, and consider upgrading the preamp later on.

On a separate issue, your friend's comment about the Klipsh's sounding
flat indicates a "flat response," i.e., reproduction of sound which is
as close as possible to the source data. This doesn't mean that the
sound is "flat" or thin-sounding. A flat response is desirable.

So what do you think of Klipsch?

Peace,
Neil X.

I don't think a lot of them, but I got a pair of Heresy I's for my
McIntosh MC30s and the combination has a very interesting compelling
quality about it. The MC30s sound wonderful but the Heresys are full of
peakiness, but somehow the two create a sound that has obvious flaws but
still is great to listen to. I'll play the same material over some B&W
speakers powered by a decent Sherwood receiver or my Event ASP 8 studio
monitors (I would look into these or the Dynaudio BM5as if you want to
go with a powered system. Both are very very nice sounding and very
true) and while it's obviously a more true reproduction, it's not as
involving. Some styles obviously work better than others (not nearly
enough slam for hip hop), but overall it's really nice. So, perhaps
think about looking for some older more efficient speakers and a nice
tube amp! The McIntosh 2015 or 2100 also can sound really wonderful and
puts out enough power for more modern less efficient speakers. I've used
my 2105 for PA work and studio work and it always sounds way better than
pro audio amps and so far as at least matched any hifi amp I've used.
