Many of you know bassist Alphonso Johnson from his years

I received this message today and am passing it on to the GD
community and others. Please visit his website athttp://www.embamba.com/ and drop him a line of
encouragement. He's a great musician and a tremendous guy
and we should all hope the best for him.

Dear Family and Friends,
Most of you already know the news of my discovery but I
thought I'd
better send out this message just in case some of you are
out of the
loop.
On Friday, September 28th I had a biopsy done on a lump in
my throat
which revealed that I have what is know as "Squamous Cell
Cancer". The
tumor is located at the base of my tongue and has spread to
the lymph
glands in my neck. The good news is that I also had a PET
Scan (entire
body) and the results show that the cancer has not spread to
any other
parts of my body.
I've decided not to focus on the negative aspects of this
disease but
to keep positive and continue with what I do
best...........MUSIC !!
I wanted to inform you all because as you know my friend
Josef Zawinul
passed away on September 11th. This man had a deep and
profound effect
on my philosophy and the way I thought about music. One of
the many
things that Joe believed in was not to get caught up in self
pity. I
don't want anyone to feel sorry for me because no one can go
back and
change the past. We can all have a great impact on the future by
living our lives to the fullest and fulfilling those dreams
that mean
the most to us.
I am in great care and surrounded by a team of specialist
who have
assured me that we are ahead of the game and have an
excellent chance
to beat this fight. And I have the best caregiver imaginable
with
Karen in my life. She has looked cancer in the eye twice and
still
gives so much love, laughter and attention to me that I know
I am in
the best of care.
Thank you for your prayers and I hope we can have that big
party to
celebrate life when I reach the other side of this journey !!
Love,
Alphonso
Bad news, all the best to AJ...
