I am greatly looking forward to a weekend visit to my city of birth.
Just a three day excursion. My wife has a Monday bidness meeting
there, so we decided to go spend the weekend.

We arrive Friday evening, will check into our hotel on Michigan Ave.,
then head over to Geno's Pizzaria East to enjoy a late dinner of deep
dish pizza with their amazing cornmeal crust.

Saturday we spend in the Art Institute, which has one of the finest
modern art collections in the nation. In the evening we head over to
the Improv Olympics to see their performance of "Whirled News
Tonight," then head up to Lincoln Square for a late dinner at one of
the stellar German restaurants in the area. It'll probably be Glunz
Bavarian Haus, or perhaps the Chigago Brauhaus. (I do miss Zum
Deutchen Eck and the Treffpunkt, very sad that they are gone.)

Sunday we rent a car and head out to Brookfield Zoo, which dukes it
out with the Bronx Zoo for best US zoo east of the Mississippi. Well
probably make a jaunt over to a brewpub in Donner's Grove or Villa
Park for lunch, then at the end of the day, stop off for dinner at a
suburban Giordano's to get some stuffed pizza (a distinct style from
deep dish). We then head over to the FirstFolio production of
Shakespeare's Richard III in Oak Brook. If we have the energy, we'll
catch a midnight show at Annoyance Theater thereafter.

Monday my wife is busy with her meetings, I'll probably go back and
wander the campus of our undergraduate alma mater, the University of
Chicago, where I undoubtedly will pick up a white half with extra hot
sauce from Harold's Chicken Shack for lunch. Man, it's great to think
about going home, even if it's just for a weekend, and my family
hasn't lived there in 20 years.

We are going for Labor Day weekend. My personal itinerary: check out a
couple of acts at the Jazz Festival, go to the Velvet Lounge for Kidd
Jordan, try a new Italian Beef restaurant, go back again to Shedd, try
to coerce my wife and family into a
zoo visit based on your post, etc.

Don't forget to hit a pizzaria, you simply don't want to miss that
experience. Geno's East, Giordano's, Bacino's, Lou Malnati's any of
those will do nicely.

And the Art Institute has the most remarkable modern art collection
west of NYC. If you aren't tripping when you go in, you will be by
the time you leave.

Peace,
Neil X.
