Oh. My. God. Google is back to real time.

Except, of course, that it isn't. This post that I'm responding to hasn't
appeared on Google yet, and about half of the posts that were made today
aren't up there yet either.

Hmm. It's up on my screen. About a minute lag. I can live with that.

But it's getting closer.

I actually made a post to help out with your ever-vigilant "cs" project.
This was an instance of non-crossposting, but it was still swill, and was
a highly appropriate title change, given the expressed desire of the
poster to have the thread title widely read. I'm sure Google will get
around to updating that thread eventually.

I saw that one, too, I think. That was the "ncs" one, right?

Odd, though, at work tonight, I popped on and it was still showing
only up till June 17. Go figure.

What seems to be happening now is that posts are showing up on Google
if you go and look at individual threads, but if you check the list of
most recent posts, that isn't being updated at all. The Doherty
thread has completely dropped off the list, despite recent additions
to it. The posts to this thread aren't being uploaded to the "new
posts" list. Google is bringing things back, but it's clearly a
gradual process. It's really interesting to watch what's happening
with another access point that allows one to know what posts are and
are not showing up on Google. There's some kind of research paper in
here somewhere, if only I were knowledgeable to write it.........

As for why the Groups are wonky, and other elements of Google aren't,
well, follow the money. There just isn't a lot of money to be made
providing free usenet access, I'm sure it's the lowest priority of the
company's online holdings.

Peace,
Neil X.
