Re: (NDC) Not a Bad Vista........

Vista is a resource hog but provided you have enough hardware it can be
impressive. Getting rid of Norton crap (and crap seems to be all they make
these days) is rarely as easy as it seems, betchya Norton still has
tentacles all through your system, you just don't know they're there.
Apparently even Symantec has been known to admit they are sometimes
unable to completely remove all traces of their products from systems where
they are no longer wanted.

Could be, but that might be slightly obsolete thinking. My
understanding is that Norton got so much bad press over their stuff
not being easy (or possible) to remove, that they had made a major
effort to improve their uninstall engines since 2005. It used to be
that said engines didn't even run on some OS's, making uninstallation
completely impossible. I had an older machine that still prompted me
for Norton authorizations long after I had run every uninstall program
that I could think of, toolbar icons were never deleted, etc. This
time it took **75 minutes** for the uninstaller to complete it's work,
but I can't find any traces of the word Norton or Symantec in any
directories. So maybe it's getting better.

Of course, just being able to buy the computer without crap you don't
want on it would be way better. It also took ages to uninstall all of
the Google crap that is bundled into Vista.

A Google Toolbar is even a nearly-integral part of Firefox 2.0, which
is very hard to get rid of. It takes a trick to end up with Firefox
2.0 without the Google toolbar--you can import preferences from a
version of OE without the toolbar, and that will cause Firefox to
prompt you to agree to a EULA to install the toolbar, which, of
course, you can decline.

Peace,
Neil X.
