An interesting sidebar about the Union Pacific is they are the only
RR I
am
aware of that still owns and regularly operates some of it's own,
original
steam engines on a regular basis, on excursions and occasionally in
actually
"revenue" service.

Now that you mention it.....

Me & the boy will be making some trackside runs in a few weeks....

PICTURES!!!!! WE WANT PICTURES!!!!!

Matt and I used to chase trains, go to train museums, take train rides
etc
all over the place. Matt's first words were "Choo choo", and he was
obsessed
by them when he was little. I don't know that I am obsessed by them, but
I
always stop and wait for a train to go by, even if it is just some 6 or
7
car local frieght train. I have tons of model trains, from the ones that
I
had when I was a kid (all HO gauge) to a bunch of my grandfathers
trains,
which comprise everything from "Z" gauge Marklin stuff that he bought in
his
last years to my prize posession-his Standard Gauge Lionel Trains which
were
his when he was a boy, and are almost 100 years old (and STILL run!!!!)

My cat is named "Chessie" for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad's mascot

http://www.chessieshop.com/cgi-bin/csostore.pl?user_action=detail&cat...

I have tons of other RR memorabilia too. Ashtrays from a bunch of
different
RR's (C&O, B&O, Santa Fe, UP, Pennsylvania, NYC, Playing cards (Chessie
and
"her old man Peake" in a plastic case, still in the cellophane!!!!)
advertisments etc.

Most of this stuff came from my grandparents and has huge sentimental
value
to me, especially the Lionel stuff.

If I ever could clean out my basement enough I would love to build a
nice
layout (The Iron Muffin can attest to what a monumental job that would
be......)

Anyway have fun checking out the 844 and the 4449. They are two
incredibly
special pieces of early-mid 20th Century history. The fact that they
still
run is awesome. I would love to see them run someday. (Actually I did
see
the 4449 during the BiCentennial celebration when it was pulling "The
American Freedom Train", but I didn't see it run, it was on "display".
(They
had a bunch of exhibits in all of the cars)

I found a a great picture of Johnny Cash on the timeline page (That
Locomotive behind him was a Reading T-1, not the 4449)

Damn everything in the seventies was better........

Scot

Yes Scot, my son Kai took to being a railfan with me at around age 3
or 4 and it grew to the point where kids at his school knew him as the
"Train" kid for many years.

<snip>

Kai?? Now what kind of name is that?

JimK

Actually, I think it's a pretty cool name.

YMMV,

Scot
