Yes Scot, my son Kai took to being a railfan with me at around age 3
or 4 and it grew to the point where kids at his school knew him as the
"Train" kid for many years. We spent hundreds of hours chasing trains
on the BNSF and UP lines in the NW as he grew up. We had some great
spots, including one where crews often stopped for a cafe and quickie-
mart before heading up into the Cascades and out to the gigantic areas
east. We were invited aboard several times by the friendly crews, and
one time my son got to do something so cool, I can't write about it
here (don't want any crews getting in trouble). We have so much
Lionel and O gauge and HO equipment - it's a small fortune....
LOL. Matt and Kai sound like kindered spirits. Matt was "the train kid" in
his school too. He could tell the difference between an SD-24 and an SD-40-2
the way most kids know who plays Shortstop or Centerfield on their favorite
Baseball team
We got to see the UP 3985 Challenger when he was really young, but
can't remember too well now, and we have seen the 844 & 4449 before
several times. His favorite tape as a child - for many years - was
Garcia & Grisman's "Not For Kids Only" and he could sing "Freight
Train" since he was about 3 or 4 years old.
That was a favorite in our house too. Thomas the Tank Engine was the big
video/PBS show which was ALWAYS on when Matt was little. I prefered the
Ringo Starr ones over the George Carlin ones myself. We also had a bunch of
Boston and Maine Historical Society videos that were shot in the 1940's and
early 50's in 16mm color. Great stuff and even more interesting because so
many of the locales still exist in one way shape or form. The best of the
bunch is the "Mainc Central Mountain Division" which runs through Crawford
Notch in the Presidential Range of NH (Near Mt Washington) I spent a lot of
time hiking and camping in the area when I was in high school and it was
very cool to Doubleheaded Mikados and Pacifics pulling 75 car freight trains
thtough the Notch. When I was hiking through there it was virtually
abandoned trackage with only the occasional train. When this stuff was shot,
the notch probably saw 15-20 trains a day. The Crawford Notch Depot is now
owned and run by the Appalachian Mt Club and is completely restored
One of my favorite websites is
http://photos.nerail.org/
The have lots of great photos there of mostly New England Rail subjects, I
love browsing these pictures. I have been to quite a few of the places in
these photos, expecially the Hoosac Tunnel, Bellows Falls, VT, White River
Junction, Edaville Railroad etc
There are a variety of different protocols that you can use for your search
criteria.
I think you get the picture. And I will post photos from this
upcoming run somehow.
Cool, you could just email them to me FTM
