The railroad trestle near Sacramento that burned was a largely wooden
structure. Rebuilding it is in no way comparable to rebuilding the
freeway section that collapsed in Oakland. Apples and oranges.

I have no doubt of that.
Back in the mid 80's the I-95 Mianus River bridge between Stamford and
Greenwich, CT collapsed. (There were some big bolts holding each section of
the bridge to the piers which held the bridge up which sheared off from the
vibration of the traffic and corrosion caused by the salt air)
I vividly remember when this happened. and boy it made a major mess for a
few days. It was the major Northbound connection between NYC and Boston.

Anyway they got a temporary sectional bridge in place over the damaged
section in a matter of a couple of days. I would imagine that if it is that
critical a link, the State of California is already looking at something
like this to get the traffic moving again
