From Conversations with the Dead:

DG Did it embarrass you as much as it embarrassed us that Weir
learned to play slide on the road for two or three years?

JG It still embarrasses me, but luckily it doesn't embarrass him.
You should hear some of the "Little Red Rooster"s we have, like Weir
plays 12 bars of E-flat, four octaves up, and we're in E.

DG I almost got the feeling that you dropped "Stagger Lee" 'cause
you were sick of hearing what he did on it.

JG Yeah, in a way. I'm into letting Weir do what he wants to do,
and sometimes I like his slide playing. It's so nasty and
outrageously raunchy, You know? Sometimes that's neat, when he hits
it.

BJ I think there's something to be said for the garage band ethos.
Why not learn on stage?

JG Yeah. That's as good a place as any to learn.

Hey, thanks, David. That's the one I was referring to, though how I
got the shakes his head part in there, I can't tell you. I do remember
something along those lines, so perhaps I'm conflating it with another
interview on another subject.

I'm not shy about expressing my distaste for Bob's slide, so I should
add the caveat that I've always said that *up to a point,* I think
Bob's a fine slide player. And that point is the 12th fret. Beyond
that, all bets, just like his intonation are decidedly off.
