Has anyone else noticed over the years that we hear this same stuff about
chocolate, coffee, tea, wine, weed, aspirin and other "products"?
The cynical side of me thinks it's all marketing ploys driven by the
respective trade/industry groups that stand to profit. But that's me.
These types of are typically funded by the NIH, which doesn't have any
stake (that I know of) in those industries). The alcohol finding has been
shown again and again in US and European studies, so it actually looks
pretty robust. As far as chocoloate, tea, etc., there are a number of
problems that make it tough to be sure about whether they're good or bad
for you. Some of the problems are statistical (they way they actually
analyze the data), and some have to do with the way the press overstates
or distorts what's actually in the report. I've personally dealt with
some of the large TV news networks and newspapers, and they're pretty
ridiculous in their quest for a "story." So much so, I refuse to talk to
them any more unless it's someone whose work I already know and really
trust.
