When I look on ftp://gdlive.com/shn I don't see many shows. Is there a
more complete archive somewhere?

archive.org has audience recordings for download; soundboards were taken
offline late last year.

then there's http://gdstore.com/
but you'll need a credit card.

otherwise, BT or snail-mail the trade-friendly stuff.

Is this an area where things have changed? A few years ago, I was more
active in downloading concert shn files, and I think I used
ftp://gdlive.com/shn, and I think I saw a lot more shows there. Have shns
for GD concerts been pulled? Is there a free, public site to download GD
shows, that has lots and lots of shows from over the years?

There's still plenty of stuff available for ftp download from gdlive
(see below). From what I remember about the amount of content, it's
pretty much the same as it ever was.

New additions have probably trickled off due to the popularity of
bittorrent. If you want to expland your collection, you really ought to
get yourself hooked up with a bittorent client (http://www.google.com
will get you all the info you could ever need). You'll quickly wonder
why you ever bothered with ftp...

230-STATEMENT TO MP3 SITE OPERATORS
The Grateful Dead and our managing organizations have long
encouraged the purely noncommercial exchange of music taped at our
concerts and those of our individual members. That a new medium of
distribution has arisen - digital audio files being traded over the
Internet - does not change our policy in this regard.
Our stipulations regarding digital distribution are merely
extensions of those long-standing principles and they are as follow:
No commercial gain may be sought by websites offering digital files
of our music, whether through advertising, exploiting databases compiled
from their traffic, or any other means.
All participants in such digital exchange acknowledge and respect
the copyrights of the performers, writers and publishers of the music.
This notice should be clearly posted on all sites engaged in this
activity.
We reserve the ability to withdraw our sanction of noncommercial
digital music should circumstances arise that compromise our ability to
protect and steward the integrity of our work.
