Parents who always try to be popular and well-liked (ala Clinton
administration) do not always get their desired outcome. Parents who
make tough decisions and stick to their guns, despite their wailing
children's pleas (ala Bush administration), are much more likely to raise
mature, responsible, appreciative adults.

That's sort of how I view the Middle East.

It's condescending, paternalistic, insulting and demeaning
hubris like this that makes much of the world hate us so.

Not only that, but this Bush-like paternalistic attitude comes from complete
delusion.

We simply cannot force alien cultures to be like us. It takes a lot of time
for primitive, backward cultures to develop and join the modern world, and
bombs and demands for "democracy" don't seem to accomplish much in helping
that along.
