The clapping thing - circa '79 - '80.....

What the hell was with the manic 4/4 clapping on every song during this
era?
You may have heard this on recordings - or maybe you were one of the
people clapping ....
Seems to be prevalent at eastern shows from the '79 - '80 time period,
the audience starts out every song the band played with the clapping on
EVERY beat.... I know people were all wound up and excited (abundance
of coke perhaps?)
But on PEGGY-O? I was just playing 5-7-79 from Easton, PA, and they
started the manic clapping double-time on Peggy-O. Fortunately it faded
away quickly, because it really doesn't go well with that song.
Anyone else notice this?
