You can also get a list of PC programs that support both FreeDB (a
public-domain style CDDB) and the Gracenotes CDDB (Gracenotes is a
commercial venture around CDDB) here
http://www.freedb.org/modules.php?name=Sections&sop=viewarticle&artid=11
There's a ton of software out there that can access one of the two
major online CD databases.
Gracenote's CDDB seems to have an edge on the freedb.org database in terms
of volume, I find quite a few boots at CDDB that aren't listed on the freedb
site, presumably iTunes is drawing a lot of folks to CDDB. I seem to recall
anyone can contribute to either database, of course that leads to some
errors, but it's also why those boots are there. I've been working with
some cataloging software that uses the freedb database and it's been fun,
more than half way into getting all our CDs listed, finding hidden tracks I
didn't know were there, discovering multiple copies of albums I can now
trade for something I don't have yet like the updated reissues with extra
tracks I also didn't know about. But at least I didn't have to type all
this stuff.
