I finally joined the 21st century and got a cell phone. I got a plan with
verizon. Well, I went to their web site to get a tone for when my phone
rings. They tones they give you with the phone are annoying, so I figured I
go to their site and get a dead tone. There is no dead tone, so I opted for
Dear Prudence, but I would rather have a dead song. Anyone know of a place
that I can get one?
Thanks to all those who reply.

I finally got a cell that supported various ring tones and "sounds". I
think I'm coming to the realization that a short mp3 clip of music is
what people are calling ringtones.
I went through a few gyrations, but the bottom line is that I didn't
want to spend any money just to have a decent ring on my cell. The
rings that come stock on the phone are the annoying ones that you hear
around you all day long from other people's phones. This is an obvious
gouge by the venders, my first cell years ago had more and better rings
that my new one. Chance? I don't think so.
So I started out looking for smallish midi files of dead songs. There
are a few simple ones available out there if you search. The problem
was they sounded lousy and didn't fit the bill of "a ring". So next I
took a few dead songs that I thought would make a nice ring. So I
edited some clean SBDs I had of Sampson and Playin into some small
little clips of strong guitar sound. The problem was they sounded
horrible by the time I chopped them down and played them on the phone.
The second problem is that when you're playing (mostly dead) music most
of the time and your phone plays dead music you miss at least half of
the phone calls. So I abandoned using songs/music. Besides the fact
that when my cell rings I want it to stop as soon as possible, not wait
around to listen to a song.
Next, I found places on the net where you can download clips of sound
effects such as horns, bells and whistles. They are ok. But my current
effort is to find an "old fashioned" ring of an old rotary telephone.
You know it goes "Ring Ring". Now *that* is how a telephone is supposed
to sound.
The key to all this is to be able to get the sounds onto the phone. For
my phone there is a $7.99 USB cable that works with bitpim (which
doesn't support my phone other than in filesystem mode). Also my phone
supports a memory card which allows me to transfer files onto the card
and then onto and off of the computer. Both of these tools are great
since I can transfer clips, music and pictures onto and off of the
phone for free.
It has been fun but after all this I'm still using the stock "Melody 1"
ringer ;-)
