Secession. Preservation of the Union. Teaching the puny states that the
Feds had the real power, and teaching the agricultural
states that the industrial states had the real power.

You already gave one reason why it didn't start: freedom of slaves.
That's the only one being disputed.

Have you not written that the American Civil War was about freedom and
abolition of slavery? I'm not going to deny that was an influence, but the
war was much more than the battle between good and evil that's popular
to believe. This country was founded on the basis of the states
governing themselves, but once the Revolution was over the Feds began
their power trip, starting with the Whiskey Tax and subsequent Whiskey
Rebellion. I doubt that most Southeners wanted anything to do with the
Union in the first place. They reluctantly agreed to "join up" in order to
kick out the Brits, but by 1861 they, like Joe, had had enough of the
Fed's shit, so to speak. We're outta here. No you're not.
Of course you're no fool and know all of this already, why you pretend
otherwise I'm not sure. White hate? Guilt? Do you believe that northern
white folks gave a shit about blacks, and their motives had nothing to do
with losing revenue from cotton taxes?
