It really should just work, although there might be something peculiar
about the hardware.

I wouldn't worry about who manufactured the motherboard... You said
your computer was a Sony Vaio (desktop model, I presume). You can
visit the Sony e-Support site, which is esupport.sony.com. That may or
may not prove useful. I'd give it a look if you gave the computer
model number.

Someone else posted about checking the Computer Management console >
Disk Management snap-in, which I assume you were talking about when you
said "computer management". Get back to the Disk Management screen and
try Action > Rescan Disks.

I read in places that XP SP2 seems to have some problems with the 1394
mass storage devices. Nothing pointed to any specific fix, other than
trying to get an updated driver from the manufacturer of the external
enclosure. I checked on the Seagate website and they don't even have
drivers for XP (built-in to the OS).

PS: It's not showing up as a Removable Storage Library (in Computer
Management), is it?
