I owned a three decker in the city for a while, but I have never dealt
with rats, I'm grateful to say.
But I imagine the rules are the same, but scaled up.
I advise several methods at once, since using one method can tend to
'breed a better rodent".
Some rats have become resistant to dominant poisons. I think the catch &
release are a waste of time. Nobody else needs these things in their
neighborhood. Rats are not even indigenous; not sure about mice.
Snap traps are good; place them against the walls. I'd alter the bait
from peanut butter to bacon fat, to some other greasy fatty thing.
Otherwise, some of the population may learn to avoid some baits.
Glue traps are not nearly as cost effective- you must throw out the trap
each kill. And they are hardly merciful- a long slow death of gnawing
off your foot. I prefer the clean (usually) kill of the snap trap. I
don't want them to suffer, just be gone.
with poison, you do risk an animal dying in the wall, but I've used it
plenty & never had it happen. the poison is supposed to make em thirsty
so they go outside for water, and then die.
I have used some of the little plastic 'see saw" type traps, but they
catch them live, so there's that.
Good luck & get crackin'
