John Perry Barlow, EFF co-founder and former Grateful Dead lyricist, tells Boing Boing:
You have no idea how sad I am about this. I fought it hammer and tong, but the drummers had inoperable bricks in their head about it.
What's worse is that they now want to remove all Dead music from the Web. They might as easily put a teaspoon of food coloring in a swimming pool and then tell the pool owner to get it back to them.
It's like finding out that your brother is a child molester. And then, worse, having everyone then assume that you're a child molester too. I've been called a hypocrite in three languages already.
How magnificently counter-productive of them. It's as if the goose who laid the golden egg had decided to commit suicide so that he could get more golden eggs.
This is just the beginning of the backlash, I promise you.
This is worse than the RIAA suing their customers.
Can this non-member of the band be any more tween girly dramatic than this?
He's basically on the fringes and has been for some time.
Sheesh.
Go write a decent lyric and get back to us. Or carry on and continue to provide amusement.
EGBH
A few days back, someone posted incorrectly about a comment that it was an "ad
hominem attack".
This comment by EGBH should be in the dictionary under "ad hominem".
Since every sentence stated by Barlow is correct, EGBH can only attack "the
messenger".
Not one word of EGBH's post discusses Barlow's points, only who he is.
He's nobody these days, IIRC.
His "points" are tween girly dramatic. Comparing musisicians charging for their music to be on par with child molestors? Issuing threats like "This is just the beginning of the backlash, I promise you".
What, he's gonna go plant a bomb or sumthin'? Sounds like a 14 year old drama queen to me.
I don't know if I actually disagree with him or not, since this issue seems a bit clouded by some greed on one side, yet has no effect on me or anything I will ever do, listen to, or care about on the other side. Like I need more of this music........... and I didn't make it, the musicians did. They get to decide what they do with it, not some ex-lyricist blowhard.
Why? Barlow is due to receive royalties from each and every download.
Now its my turn to ask WHY!
Why does HE get money from every download? He didn't write that many songs. They can't be on every show, can they?
I woudn't say "every", but on enough to make some cold hard cash.
Hard to see how it is whining when the guy is complaining about a move which could make him hundreds of thousands, if millions in extra dollars. Instead, it seems to me that he's taking a principled stand.
Maybe he is.
But he sounds like a tween girly drama queen.
Child molestors, oh brother................
NP: Arthur Honneger/Karajan - Symphonie No. 2
What's this crap? Prolly written by a child molestor................
*LOL*
Could be.
