Re: converting VHS to DVD

Isn't it great to have a dvd burner ? I bought mine about a year ago
(Sony) and I'm pretty happy with it. I try to use the XS speed
whenever possible, but if the recording is 75 or 80 minutes, I see no
point in making it on 2 discs . The 90 minute speed also looks great,
and I don't really see any difference even at the 2 hour speed,
usually. Beyond the 2 hour speed, though, I do see a difference in
quality.
I assume from what you wrote that yours is a "stand-alone" (i.e. ,
not a computer accessory) type, like mine For the obsessive Deadhead
(like me) , you might want to keep in mind that having a stand-alone
dvd burner is kind of the equivalient of having a burner for CDs that
burns TAO (Track-At-Once) instead of DAO (Disc-At-Once) . That is, if
you stop the recording (not pause) and create a new "title." there
will be a slight gap in between the two titles , just like with TAO for
CDs - there will be a slight gap in between tracks. So if you make a
track (or title) for "Lost Sailor" and the next track is "Saint of
Circumstance," it won't flow unless you make it all one track.
Whereas with a computer burner you can create a separate title or track
without losing the flow of the music, yet be able to go to your menu
and go straight to "Saint of Circumstance" if you want. Just an
FYI....
DVD burners are great for archiving your old video tapes, and for
recording straight from tv (obviously, better quality than if you
recorded to vhs, and then to dvd) . With my stand-alone burner, I can
also (digitally - through "firewire") hook up my camcorder directly to
the burner. I can also use Re-writable dvds (if you have an RW
setting) for football games and such, that you might not keep.
Football games are the only thing I might use a 3 or 4 hour speed
setting for..
The one feature that yours has that wasn't around when I bought mine
is the "Flexible Recording " setting, where it will give you the best
quality AND measure out how much will be needed to fill the dvd. That
is a pretty cool feature. Sounds like you bought a fairly decent
recorder.
