I saw the movie a week ago and thought I was seeing a commercial in the second half of it. First, I think the USA health care system has some major problems, but I don't want the gov't running it. Some observations:
1 - Moore cherry picked. Notice in France he was interviewing
the elites in Paris. Why didn't he check in with a Muslim
immigrant?
2 - You can't compare Cuba to the USA. Cuba was funded by
the USSR and now by Venezuela. Take away this oil-based
funding and Cuba would collapse.
3 - I would not trust any statistics from Cuba as it doesn't have
a free press.
4 - Canada has 30M persons and the USA 300M. Going
from 30M to 300M is not linear in terms of health care
adjustments.
5 - Moore explained that the current problems were caused
by Nixon. Not so. During WWII the USA gov't in its
wisdom put a wage-freeze in place. Employers thus
could not attract workers by raising wages so they started
to offer health care as a benefit. Then the gov't made it
tax deductible for companies but not individuals.
6 - Moore didn't question why the USA has 50 health care
markets (one for each state). This keeps prices high.
7 - Moore didn't question why the only group with no
power in the current system is the consumers of
health care. No free market there.
I support moving to a true free market health system where prices are transparent. Individuals would pay for routine care out of pocket and buy insurance policies for catastrophic events like cancer and heart disease. This would provide an incentive for individuals to live a healthy lifestyle (similar to car insurance).
I also love how Romney takes credit for implementing a working state provided system even though the system does not start up until late 2007 if then. Typical Politico.

"ME" to "WE" ~ This DID Hurt -- A Lot
Just back from seeing Michael Moore's latest film, "Sicko." The clever
tag-line for the movie says, "This might hurt a little." And it did. It
hurt a lot.
It's horrific to see how we treat our ailing and aging citizens ...
especially when compared to other countries. France, England, Cuba,
Canada -- they all seem to have it better than us and it's a huge
wake-up call to have it captured on film.
So many sad stories of people who were denied health insurance (and I am
one of those), people who lost everything because insurance was
rescinded or insufficient, those who couldn't stop working because in
order to get their medications, they needed to stay on their employers'
plan ... at 79, one man wonders, "Where are my golden years?"
I cried.
And I kept on crying, till the movie ended.
There are confessions of HMO and insurance employees -- even a doctor --
who can hardly live with themselves because they denied care to patients
in need, just to keep costs low and thereby help boost profits for The
Company. One doctor said that those doctors who denied patient claims
for service and saved the company money were rewarded with bonuses. Can
you imagine? In France (and I have to verify it was France and not
England; sorry), doctors receive bonuses, too. They are rewarded when
patients quit smoking, or lower their blood pressure. They are rewarded
when their patients get healthy.
Our health care industry has so little to do with health ... Based on
the salaries I saw for the CEO's, maybe we should rename it the Wealth
Care Industry, because profits are most definitely UP.
And then there was a story of a mother who ran her four year-old to an
emergency room to be treated for a 104-degree fever. Mother and child
were refused treatment even though the girl was obviously ill. Why? The
mother had the *wrong* insurance -- Kaiser insurance -- and she was told
to go find a Kaiser hospital. The panicking mother pitched a fit, begged
for mercy and pleaded for help, and was eventually ushered out of the
building carrying her lethargic daughter because the staff feared she
was a threat. Mother and daughter finally made it to Kaiser, just in
time for the child to fall into cardiac arrest. Soon after, the child
died. Blood on everybody's hands.
My first thought was, "F*ck this place, I'm going to France!" but then I
realized the best thing I could do is stay, and spread the word, and try
to make it better. To change the thinking here from "me" to "we," and
start taking care of our own. "Me to we" is a concept from the film. I
like it a lot.
I have absolutely no idea how to go about helping facilitate change in
health care, but as an uninsured person in Massachusetts -- where, as of
July 1, all residents MUST have health insurance, or face tax penalties
-- I'm highly motivated to find new solutions.
This is surely not the best we can do.
Go see the movie. I'd love to hear what you think.*

It would also provide an incentive for people to *not* have routine care
and to instead wait for problems to turn into expensive catastrophic
events.

So, was there anything you actually *liked* about the film? What
would you have done differently?

That would be wonderful! Have you petitioned your local or state
government about that? Or maybe one of your Senators? Or maybe a
House Rep?

Routine care would be very affordable. Persons struggling would get tax deduction for health care. Gov't provided health care would not encourage lazy people to get regular health checks anyway. This is already provided for under SCHIP and the results are not very good. If persons are not concerned about their health, then they should pay the consequences. With over 300M persons in this country I think GPHC would be a disaster. I also doubt the insurance companies and health providers will go down without a fight including taking it to the courts.
Anyone know what the most free market in the world is? IT. And look at the benefits this market has brought to the USA. Almost everyone has a cell phone, internet, and the instant communication. Business is much more efficient.
