It being increasingly obvious that even with help I am never going to
get caught up on the filk song archive, and equally obvious that we
probably don't need it anyway, I give up. This time, I shall remember
to remove it from the FAQ so it doesn't startle any body who comes along
after the fact (sorry about that, Gary M). I will be glad to contribute
to whatever archive projects are currently in the works, and of course
anything *I* post in here can be collected, sung, recited, or fled from,
screaming, at the whimsy of the rest of you.
Sorry about that, and someday I may well get the stuff various really
nice people in here organized for me posted to the archive; I'm not
removing the old files. I just am no longer going to even try to do new
ones.
A while back when we were talking about things like con reviews and such I
went ahead and registered a couple of domains with the thought of creating a
space for that. I've currently got plenty of disk space, and a medium speed
uplink. I run my own pages with database driven scripts so that doesn't seem
terribly difficult to me. I'm moderatly concerned about bandwidth issues,
but that probably won't be a problem.
I don't anticipate that this would be anything other than a personal site,
so to some extent this note is more of a statement of intention than
anything else. What I have in mind would be to take what data we have had
and add the ability to store reviews or songs in a classified, topic
searchable database. I want to include some additional information like the
blanket permissions list, a convention listing and a links registry. I
personally also like the idea of being able to generate specialized or
general songbooks. I've been building the raw bones of that for a while for
personal use, but it's not as organized as I'd like for public use.
I was going to present this when I had it up and running, I anticipate that
the development could take three to six months, but before proceeding I
contacted Kay for permission to use what she's already collected. She
reminded me that the material belongs to the origional contributors. I think
that those who signed onto the list have already given permission for what I
have in mind, but Kay's right that I should allow for discussion.
I've been following what's been said here. The basic problem seems pretty
simple, although there are some interesting requirements. I see the basic
answer as requiring that content producers be given a login. This would mean
that you'd need to join the site to post, with anonomous read priviledges. I
do think that adding a classic open wiki to the site's a good idea though,
and for some material (the gods know how many verses of
_Real_Old_Time_Religion_ come to mind) a wiki may be perfectly appropriate.
The web site will be [www.]filkers.org. It's a place holder at the moment. I
can offer some email addresses at that site if anyone needs one also. I also
registered filkers.com, and the sites will have the same content. Feel free
to either discuss things here, or email me with ideas and requests.
This is just one possible answer to the question, and I'm not against any of
the other answers that others have proposed. My initial proposal is that
I'll start by posting the requirements for the site as I've gleaned from the
postings here sometime in the next few weeks. If there's interest, I will
post a link to that document here. After I know what the community wants, I
can do more. If you're already running a filk site, let me know if there's
interest in a community web service as I've done that sort of thing too.
I think that's enough for now. How much I do with this is really dependent
on what everyone thinks of the idea.
