In the UK anyone with the following list of conditions should be offered a flu and a pneumonia shot by their doctor every autumn.
I first heard only a few years ago that there were shots for
infectious pneumonia (that don't render you totally immune
but do cut down significantly on your chance of getting it
and the severity of the case) and got one shortly thereafter.
(And obviously these are not the same as flu shots.) I recommend this.
See http://coldflu.about.com/od/pneumonia/p/pneumoniashot.htm
And, while I'm at it, I recommend that anyone of sixty or over who's
had chicken pox get a shingles shot.
* a serious heart problem such as heart failure,
* a serious asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),
* a long-term kidney or liver disease,
* diabetes, or
* a weakened immune system as a result of an illness such as HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) or AIDS or due treatment, such as chemotherapy.
I believe Marion was diabetic. She just got unlucky I guess. I do agree it is a good idea to get these, I get the flu one every year because of asthma and IIRC the pneumonia one is good for 5 years.
