Note: This is a work in progress, there will be changes -- if something
on the site doesn't work for your browser, please let us know!
The "Make your OVFF 22 Hotel reservations early" blurb comes out
squashed in Firefox 1.0 under Fedora Core 3. The font is not
compatible with the style ***. I don't understand why web designers
insist on trying to control layout so tightly. HTML is supposed to be
formatted by the browser, not the page author. It is not PDF.
I'm just using common fonts. I'm trying very hard *not* to try to
control layout to a high degree -- I only use relative font sizes, not
absolute, I only use percentages, points, or em units for most padding
and margins, not pxiels.
I'll see if I can fix the problem that you're seeing, but the HTML on
these pages has been extensively tested on many browsers on many
platforms and operating systems. I don't have the resources to test
every combination, however.
I'm not a web designer -- I'm a software engineer who's volunteering
for duty as the webmaster for OVFF.
These pages have no JavaScript, no cookies, no Flash animations or
navigation. They have been run through multiple HTML and CSS
validation suites.
Originally, I left the choice of fonts to the browser; I just
specified sans-serif or serif. I got complaints from some people who
previewed the new design about how ugly Arial was, and how New Times
Roman wasn't the best choice either, so I put in first choices on the
font-family specifications that were both common and more visually
pleasing on those platforms that I have that had them.
I have SUSE 10, MacOS X, FedoraCore 4 PPC, Windows XP, and tested with
Firefox 1.5 and Opera 8 on all of them, lynx on the Linux systems and
under Cygwin, IE 6 on Windows, and Safari under MacOS-X. It's been
reported to me that the pages also worked under links, though I did
not try it myself.
So, I'm sorry if my attempt at website design offends you. I'll do
what I can to make the alert non-squashed (I'm assuming you mean the
one on the uppper-left under the masthead, right?) but I don't have
Firefox 1.0 on anything, and I don't know what fonts are available on
Fedora Core 3.
