And no, I'm not the one saying infringers should be sent to jail. All I've said is that there needs to be a non-monetary remedy to make the system effective, and that jail is _one possibility_. While I won't categorically reject that possibility, give me a credible alternative and I'll probably jump at it.

There have been cases of folks who were SERIOUS copyright violators who did in fact go to jail... one of those that I know of was only what a country boy like me calls a "Few miles" (bit under an hour's drive) from where I'm typing.

However a few years ago, when the original Napster was assulted by the industry, There were a fairly large number of casual Napster users who found their computers impounded and themselves in court as defendants.

Did they go to jail, Mostly no, Did they get their computers back, I don't know, Did they spend a whole lot of money on lawyers and possibly fines. You bet. Who won the cases... The lawyers of course.

One of the issues is not only is it money that talks when it comes to laws being written, or re-written, but a whole lot of the folks who write and vote on those laws were lawyers by trade before they got into politics (Poly=many, tics=blood sucking parasites) and thus they tend to write laws to the greatest benefit of their old law partners. Thus the lawyers always win.

This is not to say that there are not some very nice lawyers out ther, or for that matter in here... (I mean, at least half of all lawyers in any given courtroom are good guys, Think about it)
