We can take it one step at at time if you like: what do you understand

ASCII is a character set that contains 256 items.

Properly speaking, ASCII is a 7-bit character set, with only 128 code
points.

It's the ISO 8859 8-bit character sets that have 256 code points (not all of
which are used).

For my own part, I cannot imagine why someone seriously interested in
using a computer as a tool (rather than a fascinating puzzle to be
manipulated and solved) wouldn't use every time-saving tool
available. Avoiding a graphical interface makes no sense to me. It
was devised by people over a long period of time who were seriously
interested in making computers useful for general work, not just
engineering problem-solving. As we get closer and closer to real
standards, why in heaven's name go to such archaic means of graphical
reproduction as HTML (which has been subsumed by PHP and Perl anyway),
when there are simple, fast, effective, and quite elegant means freely
available and out there?

Incidentally, to someone who says that they can work faster using
Emacs, or any other systems from the late Neolithic -- I'm here to
join a head-to-head playoff. We'll see which of us can enter and
print out the last movement of the Shostakovich Symphony 5 first.
I'll be using Sibelius.

I wouldn't want to predict whether Sibelius or Emacs with LilyPond would be
faster for that task, each in the hands of a skilled user.
